Environment and climate change

The Climate Pledge is an initiative launched in 2019 by Amazon and Global Optimism to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by the year 2040.

The Climate Pledge” is a project launched by Amazon and Global Optimism in 2019, which aims to meet the Paris Agreement targets ten years ahead of schedule.
For Amazon and the signatory companies, the commitment is to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, 10 years ahead of the 2015 Paris Agreement target.

The Climate Pledge commitments

Companies that join the initiative pledge that they will dramatically accelerate environmental sustainability projects:

  • Regularly measure and report their greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Implement decarbonisation strategies in line with the Paris Agreement through concrete innovations and real business changes aimed at improving efficiency, increasing the use of renewable energy, recycling materials and other strategies to eliminate CO2 emissions.
  • Neutralise any remaining emissions with additional offsets that are quantifiable, real, permanent and have a positive social impact, with the aim of achieving net zero annual emissions by 2040.

Joining The Climate Pledge offers companies the opportunity to become part of a community of leading companies, organisations and partners from different sectors, all with the common goal of protecting the global economy from the risks associated with climate change.
This is a powerful message that Amazon wants to send to the market. As Jeff Bezos himself said, “If a company with the physical infrastructure of ours – delivering more than 10 billion items a year – can meet the Paris Agreement goals 10 years early, then any company can do it.”

The numbers of The Climate Pledge

To date, more than 100 companies from 25 sectors in 16 Countries have signed the commitment, which was championed by Amazon’s founder and CEO. This clearly demonstrates the significant collective impact this project can have in tackling climate change.
